“Alumni Voices”  # 1 July 2009

Hello Intercordia Alumni!

We are sending you the inaugural issue of “Alumni Voices,” a newsletter to keep us connected with one another and with the newest Intercordians who will be encouraged by your stories, experience and wisdom.
We are hopeful that every alumnus will receive this initial issue, so if you know an Intercordia alumni ask them if they received this newsletter and if not send us their email address or have them send it to info@intercordiacanada.org

Sarah Watson/Kings/Ukraine/2006 wrote a short piece, which we think is a great launch for the newsletter. She writes:

Sometimes I wonder what made Intercordia so different from every other program at university, what made it ‘stand alone’ as a journey that changed me more than any other trip did? So, I made a list. Here are 10 reasons that I think Intercordia rises above the rest.
1. I learned a language
2. I now have a whole new family overseas that I keep in touch with
3. The trip was independent, there was no teacher there to lead us around
4. I gained university credits; I didn’t just take a summer off to travel
5. The trip fostered new cultural understandings and broke down stereotypes
6. I have maintained sustainable friendships around the world
7. I gained work experience! It wasn’t just a study trip, now on my resume I can say   ‘worked with English as a second language students’, or in a ‘Ukrainian speaking environment’ etc.
8. I am one of the few! Intercordia is an experience beyond ‘studying abroad’. Thousands of students a year go on exchange, only a few do Intercordia!
9. CHOICE! The Intercordia experience is unique to everyone; it varies based on country, placement and even the family you are staying with.
10. Finally, I got to travel for the summer! This was my first visit to Europe, my first real interaction with another culture, my first chance to travel independently….and it stuck with me!

Beautiful!! Do you have a story about your experience and what you learned and how it changed your life? Are you doing something now that is connected to your Intercordia Experience? Contact us with an idea or story for future issues: info@intercordiacanada.org
Peace,
Clara, Lisa, Mary Bee and Joe
