Loran Scholars
Welcome Loran Scholars!
We’re excited to offer the Intercordia Canada experience to all Loran Scholars! We’ve worked with the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation to craft a unique program JUST FOR YOU! We hope you’ll take the time to move around our Web site, letting Intercordia participants share their experiences with you and learning more about the vision and philosophy behind Intercordia Canada.
How the Program Works for Loran Scholars
Formation
A key part of the Intercordia program is the preparation we do together. Part of the preparation is logistical, but the other part is helping you to develop a framework with which to live and work in another culture. We will be communicating with you throughout the winter months and you will participate in a three day seminar offered in early May just prior to your departure for your placement.
International Placement
You will live with a host family and work in a community-based organization from May to August with other Intercordians. We offer placements in Bosnia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ghana, Honduras, Nicaragua and Ukraine. Our placements offer opportunities to be involved with health centres/clinics, youth centres, workshops for disabled persons, schools, farm cooperatives, art programs and more!
- Leslie lived with a host family of 8 in the Nicaraguan mountains and worked on their organic vegetable farm, traveling with them to Estili each Saturday to sell their produce at the local market. She came home with dirty hands and a better understanding of what really makes a cooperative venture work!
- Philip spent his summer in a rural village in southern Ghana living on a family compound with an extended family of 25 and teaching English and math in a small rural school. He came home speaking some “Dembe,” a love for Africa and a desire to be a teacher with a heart!
- Yumi lived in a small town in Bosnia-Herzegovina that is recovering from the civil war and strife of the 90’s. She worked in a Peace Centre that brings together Christian and Muslim children and youth for reconciliation and recreation. She came home realizing how difficult and important peace work really is!
Reintegration
An often-overlooked aspect of intense international experiences is reintegration back into Canadian life. You will participate in a two day seminar with other Intercordians upon your return in August. The seminar is specifically designed to help you share your stories and integrate your experience.
Cost
The total cost of the program is $5,300.00. This covers the Seminar Preparation and Reintegration Program, round trip airfare to your placement (departing from and returning to Toronto), medical screening and insurance and all costs associated with your three month placement. You will be responsible to pay for any visas and/or travel shots required for your particular placement country.
